Welcome to 'Listen To The Sirens' a blog based site that aims to share some quality live Gary Numan recordings and Numan related artists. For a number of years I have run a similar site that is focused on The Stranglers (Aural Sculptors). This Numan based site, like the Stranglers one, is absolutely non-profit making. All recordings are shared freely for and by like minded fans. Similarly, no official material will appear on this site. Go and buy it/download it legitimately and support the artist.

Two Nights In Manchester

An incredible 38 years ago saw the 'Teletour' roll into Manchester, surely one of the most impressive stage shows that the country has seen in terms of scale and spectacle. One of these Manchester shows (he played at the Apollo on both the 7th and 8th September) was the first bootleg I ever purchased at a long established street market in Brighton. That must have been hot on the tail of purchasing Living Ornaments '80 as I recall that the two complimented each other wonderfully. Amongst other songs the bootleg added 'Telekon' and an early outing of 'Stories'.

Around the time of 1194's 'Sacrifice' album, which to my mind was the first time since the mid-80's that he started to get back on track, Gary had gained the confidence to revisit his extensive back catalogue and this ultimately paved the way for a series of classic album tours that was kicked off in 2006 with a 'Telekon' tour.

Here are the band again from Manchester on what proved to be a stunning tour.

In Bed With Medinner Session 1994 Broadcast 22nd April 1994

In the early to mid-90's comedian Bob Mills hosted an excellent late night sketch show that also showcased weekly a mix of new and old material from bands that saw their first taste of fame in the late '70's and early '80's (The Damned, SLF, Buzzcocks all featured).

In 1994 following the release of the return to form 'Sacrifice' album, Gary Numan started on the long haul back to critical acceptance and it was this kind of rare TV exposure that would have done much to bring Numan back to the attention of an audience who had probably last heard the name 10 years previously before his creative slide.

Great set from this tour. I went down to Brighton for this one and was thrilled to see Chris Payne and RRussel Bell back on stage to pay tribute to the recently departed Ced.

Great gig indeed.

Gary Numan on Replicas (BBC 6 Music) 2012

Back in March 2012, 6 Music's Steve Lamaq, in the Classic Album regular slot, turned his attention to the 1979 Tubeway Army release 'Replicas'. This album was hugely importtant to me from the moment that I got it from the one record shop in Lewes, back in '81.

Hammersmith Odeon 13th October 1983

The weeks in April 1981 leading up to the Wembley Arena 'Farewell' gigs were a hot topic of conversation at school. I was 12 at the time and that meant that my parents were not prepared to allow me to travel from Sussex to North London for the event. However, a number of pupils that were in the 4th year (in old terminology) had tickets. Having witnessed the proceedings on video I can only presume that they had a good time of it!

So that was the end of the live spectacle.... or was it?

In what was perhaps the shortest retirement in band history, Autumn of '83 saw Numan back on the road promoting 'Warriors'. This was my chance and I saw him at the Brighton Centre.

If I am honest, to this 14 year old's eyes, it wasn't the Teletour or Wembley, the brass I could take or leave and the slap bass of Joe Hubbard was just not Paul Gardiner. But this was still Numan and it meant a great deal to me.
